I was at the local brew pub earlier this evening, and had a horrific encounter with a Weiss. It was brewed with a lemon zest, which is unnatural to begin with, but I swear the yeast was still alive. Ever drink wort? No amount of lemon could save that poor wheat beverage.
Fucking hippie craft brewers. Sorry Dusty, couldn't resist.
The hefeweizen is the pinnacle of the brewer's craft. They're supposed to have yeast particulate in them. (As for the use of citris in hefes, I do not agree with it. Hefes taught me to enjoy beer (TY Herr Paulaner!), and I would not dream of contaminating them with lemon or oh-my-fuck-give-me-a-gun-orange. What brand did you have?

I love hefeweizens and that's usually my beer of choice but I have to admit, I preferred them when breweries were only releasing them as a summer beer. That made them kind of special. Mind you, it doesn't keep me from drinking them in February.

Not branded, brewed at the pub, by I assume what was a hippie craft brewer. There's a scary amount of white boy dreadlocks on staff. Yes it had particulate aplenty, but isn't the yeast supposed to be dead? I'm worried these little fuckers are establishing a militarized civilization in my lower intestine, feeding on lemon zest and rum and colas. I've gotten them stoned and hoped for the best.

They are, however, a GREAT hot-weather beer.

No argument here. This Purple Kush I'm smoking is a great hot-weather brew, too.

The Bell's were a gift, actually. They're a little TOO stout for my taste, actually. They're good enough for free beer, but I'd rather have something from Duck-Rabbit or Great Divide.
Try this, if it's available in your area:
Not as good from a bottle as from a keg, but excellent nevertheless.

The only Milk Stout I've had was produced by the Duck-Rabbit. If I was to ever encounter another, I'd try it in a heartbeat.

Beer is going out of style in Japan. It's being crowded off the shelves by something called happo-shu which is beer made from any old crap (including in one case, I swear it's true, beans) lying around, but not malt which causes the tax per can to go up. Nasty but cheap, sold mostly to young kids who don't know any better.
There are a lot of good microbrews here, if you can find them and if you want to pay the price, but the beer of choice is still Ebisu. Sapporo made an Ebisu wheat beer that was test marketed in Osaka in the very early spring, but now that the weather is hot and we really need it, it's been pulled off the market.
Thank Goddess for all the mead I have stashed under my house!

Not in July or August you wouldn't...... It's good in the winter, I used to have a favorite sleazy dive to have dinner in when I was working in town; good cheap Japanese pub food, not overly clean and full of drunken salarymen and the occasional gangster or transvestite.
The problem is that any rotgut swill sake tastes good hot, but the good stuff still tastes good cold. Like beer, but opposite. That being said, sake is a vengeful beverage at the best of times. SOP here is to drink all you want, then stop at a cheap ramen stand, let the noodles absorb the the toxins and excess alcohol, and then puke on the way to the station.

Racer 5 drafts for 3$! If I have to go bottles, I’m drinking Spaten Optimator. Sorry jesus, that’s the shit. You can drink malt liquor in public because it’s imported.

I haven't had the optimator recently, but the regular Spaten is the most tasteless beer I've ever had.
Also: 3$/bottle is fucking EXPENSIVE!

Excellent video JLP! Jarring, annoying yet excellent.
Speaking of beer, check out dinner. A little over a half gallon of Kingpin Kolsch, and 2 lbs. of Tulip Poplar honeycomb. Which gives the curious a precise latitude and longitude :)

They had $10 pitchers so I said, “What the hell?” After 2 pints, I had a horrible taste in my mouth. Fuck Sam Adams. I’ll take a Sierra over their shit any day.

I work at a brewery, we make good beer, so I tend to have that on draft in the kegerator. The beer fridge is another story. Let's see, lately I've been drinking...
Founders Centennial IPA:
Bell's Two Hearted Ale:
Aaaaand a few others. I can't be bothered to wander downstairs and check the contents of the recycling bin; I'll check back in later and report my findings.

The artwork on that label was created by Ladislav Hanka, an artist in Kalamazoo. he created several of the Bell's labels. Good stuff - the beer and the art.

In any case, you can take comfort in knowing that you are in good intellectual company. But we already knew this, didn't we?
More intelligent children in both studies grew up to drink alcohol more frequently and in greater quantities than less intelligent children. In the Brits' case, "very bright" children grew up to consume nearly eight-tenths of a standard deviation more alcohol than their "very dull" cohorts.
