I believe the NYPD has changed their motto to: "To Serve and Protect.  Yeah, right..."

I've always said that the splitting of the police force into traffic and crime would serve both the police and the citizenry.

The half-coppers are the most dangerous, it's like wannabe gangsters - always assing themselves out to prove they are as tough as the real thing.

And then Darwin injects himself in to the situation.

Callous as it may be, pretty sure this is something EVERYONE in the black community is painfully aware of.

Not much detail in the original story, but a little googling leads me to believe he was white, and had some mental health issues...

It doesn't appear Baier had used or brandished a weapon during the encounter, Cox said.

He died at the scene.

We’re the only ones out here.

About 20 minutes before the shooting, a man called the sheriff's office to say a car was spinning around in circles in the front lawn of his home east of town, according to radio transmissions.

Isn't 23 is a bit old to cut lawn donuts? Malicious mischief was never my thing but my fuckwit teen associates were fond of it. That and leaf bag lunging. Aim for pregnant plastic with an assheavy beater, and make them rake a second time.

Forget Heisenberg; who's the real public menace?

"Frankly, if any other group of individuals were acting the way (the Albuquerque Police Department) has allegedly been acting, some of us in law enforcement might refer to them as a continuing criminal enterprise and/or engaged in the act of racketeering," then-District Attorney Kari Brandenburg wrote. "I appreciate how bold a statement that is."

Grandma told by police to return footballs kicked into her garden- or she could be charged with theft

Ms Freeman says two Humberside Police officers came to her house in Bridlington, Yorkshire, after her neighbours complained that she had failed to return two balls kicked into her garden the previous day.
...
Her neighbour, who did not want to be named, admitted that the balls had been kicked over the wall, but said her children, aged 11 and six, were too scared to go and retrieve them.

Sorry to laugh, but I can't get over the fact that they sent Humberside officers to deal with a case of petty theft. Methinks I've been watching too many detective shows.

Back on topic: cops have super drug-detecting abilities.

Officer Carroll: "You're giving me indicators that you have consumed marijuana, okay? So at this time, I believe that your failure to maintain lane was the reason for that -- so you're being placed under arrest for DUI, okay?"

The prosecutor filed a dismissal of the DUI-drug charge five months later: "Defendant performed well on FSEs (Field Sobriety Evaluations) and blood and urine were negative."

If the lab comes up negative, does that mean the cop was wrong?  No, it's science that is fallible!

"Yeah, that's what they said," Ebner replied. "The test results were wrong, and also, if I had a urine test, it would have come back positive for drugs."

But Katelyn got her own urine test the same week as her arrest -- scanning for any metabolites that would still be in her system. The urine test was also negative for marijuana -- or other drugs.

NJ Fire director who hit school children 3 years ago gets into 20th accident. Has had license suspended 18 times.

NEW BRUNSWICK -- A fire official who was barred from driving city vehicles after hitting three kids walking home from school three years ago has recorded his 20th accident, the city confirmed Friday.

The accident happened last week while the fire director, Robert Rawls, was driving his city-owned SUV three months after being allowed to drive city vehicles again, according to NBC News.

Rawls pleaded guilty to careless driving in 2014 in connection with an accident that injured children in a crosswalk. As part of his plea deal, he was fined $206.

Shortly after the accident, Rawls' driving history over the last decade, which included 19 accidents and multiple speeding tickets, became public. Rawls also has had his license suspended 18 times, according to previous reports.

Still getting promoted!

Other than Rudy Giuliani, does anybody still care if NYC is a livable city? And now that he has switched sides, does even he? The pendulum there is rapidly swinging back to the bad old 60's as everyone is focused on walling themselves off in their apartment towers and leaving the city to the rats and roaches.

So that's how "faith healers" get away with it.  They just pass the plate to everybody in the crowd, no direct billing.

I wonder how all those Democrats who fought so hard against his confirmation feel about him now?

But seriously, civil forfeiture is the kind of thing that, if happening in another country, would cause us to boycott their government, but the domestic version is AOK with the local politicians who just see $$ from the free money machine and state/fed level politicians who are more than happy to criminalize untraceable cash in order to force people into more traceable and taxable forms of financial transfer.

I was recently in India and they just went through a nee-plus-ultra version of this, with the government declaring that all current large denomination bills in circulation as illegal, only allowing them to be deposited into banks and traded for ATM cards. India has a simple method of taxation: It just taxes a certain percentage of every dollar deposited into your account each year, regardless of source. So if you sell a car or a load of rice or just get paid back by your brother in law, all of that is taxed. The banks do the calculation, remove the money from your account and remit it to the central government. All the banks have apps so you can pay someone easily from your phone. So, obviously, lots of people live in the cash economy, just like here. So India tried to combat this by essentially declaring any bill over $20 (cost of living adjusted, the real bills were worth less than $10 USD) invalid and everyone had 30 days to deposit them all or anybody found holding them would be arrested and all money confiscated. I'm sure the idea made US legislators delirious with jealousy.

Thomas might actually (operative word, MIGHT) break his longstanding pattern and make an uncharacteristically reasonable ruling?
