I'm not even going to try imagining how the law of unintended consequences is going to rear its head on this one....

It pisses me off that we have to resort to these measures.  However, I believe there are subtle changes that can be incorporated into school designs to make them more secure without appearing to be fortresses.  I can't see school massacres falling out of fashion anytime soon.

Maybe a little extreme, but I wonder how many would have actually died at Columbine had all the kids been armed instead of just two.  (No, not suggesting we arm the kids, but let's do away with "gun free zones" and make killing our children a bit more sporting.)

We have no such hope, one simple IED can destroy a bus load of kids.  We are only fooling ourselves by pretending to be able to handle this risk; without addressing the underlying core causes we are just throwing money at an unsolvable problem. It's not like this is something new...

Just the 21st Century version of "duck and cover". If you can't fix the problem, at least convince the masses that you've fixed the problem.

Erecting castles. Good, good. Personally, I'd have gone further back in time for the solution to the problem, but I guess I'm just old-fashioned that way.

They have done this at my daughter's school. They installed a 6 foot chain link fence around the whole thing and put in gates with handles only on the inside. Too bad they used simple latch catches. Every kid has an ID badge around their necks (due to a previous idea that if everyone just had badges it would help somehow...) and it only took about 2 seconds for them to realize that they can use the badge to flip the latch and go in and out whenever they want. Even the teachers do it. Money: Wasted. Security: Nil.

If we would just listen to the NRA for once and issue every citizen an RPG we wouldn't have these problems.

The patriots who supplied the chain-link fencing don't think that money was wasted, and neither do the pols who got the kick-backs from it. And after all, what in America is more important than that?

Where's the article it goes with, because it just looks like Career Day to me.
