For other logophiles in the crowd, I suggest the 1811 edition of the Dictionary of the Vulgar Tongue at Project Gutenburg. It contains such gems as:
DOG'S PORTION. A lick and a smell. He comes in for only a dog's portion.
SHOOT THE CAT. To vomit from drunkenness.
DISGUISED. Drunk.
BUTCHER'S DOG. To be like a butcher's dog, i.e. lie by the beef without touching it; a simile often applicable to married men.
I found it a fascinating read.
