That is of course interesting and not well known but does not provide absolution. Our american plantation industry produced sustainable populations rather quickly, it was an economic goal after all, to grow our own slaves.

But what that does not show is the amount of money the Yankees merchants made off financing and running parts of the triangle trade sending new found African slaves to the meat grinder that was the sugar plantations in the Caribbean and such areas.

Yuh, just think, cheap sugar was the only thing that ever made cranberries either profitable or palatable.

One part of the narrative I've never understood is how Caribbean slavers could make back their investments when mortality rates were so high, death within 60 days the way I always heard it.

Umm, the sugar was for the rum. Around here were the largest alcohol plants in North America. Did you think we were going to grow a nation on cider crab apples?

Materials were expensive, labor in those slave economies must have been extra cheap back then Those yankee ship owners and captains of yore were damn good at moving men and materials in a cost effective manner. Our first great homebrewed global success in business. Yankee grit, ingenuity and American exceptionalism combined.
