For the record, Winston Churchill started the population bombing craze, his goal was to divert the Luftwaffe attacks away from the port and infrastructure facilities. He was successful. He also bears responsibility for all that followed which pretty much explains why he stayed drunk from that point onwards.

Well, he made a decision to retaliate by bombing Berlin, after one of the German bombers got lost during a night raid and bombed Croydon Airfield just outside London. Had the Luftwaffe continued with the bombing of RAF fields instead of going batshit crazy and bombing the British countryside in re-retaliation, they may possibly have won the Battle of Britain.
