Hello everyone, this is a heads up that I'm hoping to migrate High Street to a new server over the weekend (August 22-23, 2015).  You might notice times when it's not available.

We decided to keep the same version of the forum software, so you shouldn't see any changes in function or appearance once the switch is complete.  The performance should be roughly the same as well, but the underlying infrastructure will be better supported.

(This has nothing to do with yesterday's outage - choad and I have been discussing this for long time and a few days ago I finally promised him I'd do it this weekend.)

Good luck.  Remember to sacrifice a few chickens before you start.

Please make them virgin chickens, just to be safe.

Is this a time to be taking any chances?

Better throw a pig into the mix as well.

OK, we've moved over to the new server.  The forum should work basically the same.  You may notice the following:

* The side banners won't change until I get the rotation script up and running.
* The most-read statistics on the front page won't update until I get that script up and running.
* E-mail notifications may not work initially until the mail server is configured.

Speak up if you run into any other problems.

We launched this project 8 years ago this month, first hosted at 1and1, then dreamhost and for most of the remaining seven years on the same server and operating system at linode. I made countless tweaks before handing off to Orangeplus - all undocumented, because I was an idiot in a hurry. O+ added his own enhancements before wandering away and square has managed everything since. We would not exist without the long hours he committed here and he gave us something here money can not buy; a home for all the better tweaks and hacks cruel.com's former inhabitants have brought to the site. Show him some love, ok?

True. It was late, and I was beyond clear thinking. Send square cash money.

I don't mean to be accusing or passive-aggressive, but JFYI it looks like the banner and banner statistics databases didn't make the great leap forward, or more accurately the Header Image Manager page doesn't yet know that they did. Anyone planning to add a banner please wait until Square works his or her magic.

Yeah, let's not allow things to get all smurgly in here.  It makes me nervous.

Anyway, the side banners are rotating and e-mail seems to be working.

Top banners (headers) had a couple different problems requiring a tweak to the database and some code changes.  Tested uploading one and all looks to be OK now.  Let me know if you run into any more problems.

Still remaining is to get the log analysis going (and updating the front-page read statistics).

Aaaaand this is done.  Everything should now be back to normal working as it did before.  You may notice that the log analysis only occurs once per day instead of once per hour, and the read statistics on the front page are updated five times per hour instead of ten.  These jobs were putting the most load on the old server and really didn't need to be run so often.

Thanks, for all the hard work!  Having divorced myself from the infrastructure side over 20 years ago, I barely even know what you're talking about.   And, I'm fine with that.
