With the reading of their own version of a Declaration of Independence, founders of the state of New California took the first steps to what they hope will eventually lead to statehood. CBS Sacramento reports they don't want to leave the United States, just California.

"Well, it's been ungovernable for a long time. High taxes, education, you name it, and we're rated around 48th or 50th from a business climate and standpoint in California," said founder Robert Paul Preston.

The state of New California would incorporate most of the state's rural counties, leaving the urban coastal counties to the current state of California.

First, wouldn't that be "Nuevo California"?

Secondly, notice how they want to leave all the old debit, etc. to the "old" state and start fresh? I'm guessing that behind closed doors this is being sold as a way for those counties to discharge their obligations to the state and clear their terrible credit so they can start issuing bonds again.

Lastly, I wonder how many Representatives and electoral votes New California would get under that plan. Probably not very many.

That's the model they keep bandying about. Seeing the parallels between the deep political divide that prompted the liberal northern counties of Virginia not wanting to get sucked into the Civil War on the side of the slaveholding Virginia counties and the current red/blue Balkanized political divide in California, it makes perfect sense. I just don't know if the coastal counties of CA will want to see them leave or will want to help them on their merry way.

W.W.V.

Hopefully those secessionist assholes in West Texas are planning the same thing.  They can have Fort Worth as their Capital.

Primero, there's already a Nuevo, California.

Secundo, that should read "California Nuevo."

Tercero, yes, I'm an asshole.

Yeah, are you still cracking last fall's black walnuts? Fuckers stain everything they touch, but jesus, they're tasty.

SD has its charm, if you're wealthy but I liked Puerto Vallarta way more. If asked to name earthly paradise, though, I'd select a small farm I once knew along the Delaware River, some 20 miles south of the Water Gap.
