Sorry, the logical error here is, his argument from adverse consequences. Forget guns, heavily regulate ammunition.

he argument from adverse consequences can be seen as an argument that is intended to be pragmatic ‐ about what we should do, not about what is true ‐ but then comes to the wrong kind of conclusion. In many genuinely pragmatic arguments, however, adverse consequences are relevant to the conclusion and no fallacy is committed. So it is important to notice exactly what the conclusion of the argument is. The ASCC's conclusion was that they should question the idea that diet plays a role in causing cancer; it was a conclusion about what they should do. The claim about consequences ‐ that people will probably delay going to their physician if they believe that diet plays a role in causing cancer ‐ is relevant to that conclusion.
There are workarounds there... of course. I have a neighbor whose stock of ammunition is in the 12-15k level, which he reloaded himself. Each of the cartridges can be reloaded multiple times. Just as 3d printers can now spit out AR's, 1911's etc. (Ghost Gun) there will be a technological work around for ammunition.

There's a lot of Post Hoc Ergo Prompter Hoc involved too.
I don't actually fear the folks that can make their own ammo or even craft their own guns (metal, not computer and plastic) because I don't think they're the Problem. I was even being semi-facetious about controlling ammo. Although, Eddie Murphy had a routine where we just make each bullet cost $100 that actually made some points.
The biggest problem, for lack of a better term, is gun maturity. Too many people, mostly white young men, who think that this is either the Wild, Wild, West, or some kind of dystopian world that they have to turn all Madd Max on the group of people who they have been brainwashed to believe are the enemy. I could even say that religion is the real enemy here but that's another discussion for another day.
Much like a political party who shall remain nameless, all I'm hearing from responsible gun owners and irresponsible gun nuts is reason's why "X" won't solve the problem. Fine, then they need to either solve it themselves or face seeing a lot of "X" in the future that they're really not going to like and may not actually solve anything.
