Hi George, glad to see you're still hanging in there.  Dallas is much the same, although we live in a northwest suburb.  We do pre-order and pickup with both Walmart and Sams now.

Wow, I don't know what you guys are talking about, here in coastal SC its all open for business. t-shirt shops, ice cream stands run by 20 somethings who clearly wish they were somewhere else, hotels, tourists still arriving last week as packs of multi-generational families, riding bikes, going to the restaurants that allow patio seating, and golf, golf, golf. All upon Governor's orders. But don't worry he speaks to Trump everyday I heard our dear leader say.

The elderly skewed residents are about to start burning tires on the bridge and have already formed vigilante groups driving around to find NY license plates since the sheriff won't help them without orders from the Governor.

He finally closed the public beaches barn door long after they had come for spring break and left.  I wouldn't accept any cash from people for a few months.

Hello G.O., it has been a while.

Here in the Shenandoah Valley, Trump remains inexplicably popular and many people still believe it is all a deep state hoax, even while they buy up all the paper products, hand sanitizer, and staples.

All of the big stores around here are tapped out. But go to the Hispano-mart on the corner and they are fully stocked. It's a combination of White Panic never dirtying their shoes in such a low-class place and their normal customers not having enough money to buy extra frijoles, much less cleaning out the steak and chicken.

As some may recall, I live in San Antonio.  People were a wee bit nervous until the announcement that Fiesta Week, which is a massive tourism-a-ganza held in April, has been postponed to November.
That announcement was made the first week of this month, and that was when--well, not all hell, but a considerable amount of hell--broke loose.
All the retail stores, in particular the grocery stores, were swarmed and cleaned out.  I attempted to do a little shopping one afternoon and was basically crowded out of the three stores I tried to enter.
Husband™, who honestly has very few flaws, does have the flaw of many males who assume their wives worry too much; he listened patiently to my story when I got home.  But on Saturday (his turn to run errands), he ignored my counsel and didn't leave the house until nearly lunchtime.  He was gone nearly three hours and came home nearly empty-handed with a horror story of his own...
That week, the grocery stores reduced their hours to allow for re-stocking the shelves, sterilizing shit, etc.  They are now only open from 8:00-8:00.  So on the following Saturday (my turn to run errands), I arrived at the store about 7:50 to find a queue running literally around the building.  There was a security presence.  I waited in the queue for 40 minutes, by which time the dairy was gone, the bread was gone, shelf-stable stuff like pasta and rice...I wish I'd gotten a photo of the poultry section.  There was a package of necks there.  Everything else was gone at 8:30 am.  I went from there to a Sam's Club, waited another 30 mins in another queue, got more stuff (they were out of dairy also) and then went home exhausted--but not too tired to go directly to a hot shower and dump every stitch I had worn into the hamper.  I was well spooked by then.
Just last week, on the 23rd, the city announced "shelter in place" or "self-quarantine" or whatever the fuck people are calling it, and our boss set us all up to work remotely, and here I sit in my cozy house.
I'm grateful to live in a municipality where the people in government have some sense.  I'd be happier if I had a ballpark idea of when I'll be able to, like, browse in a dress shop or sit down in a restaurant--but I know we've got it better than a lot of people at the moment, even people right here in the city.
Also, gas is $1.65 a gallon.  I'm trying to remember the last time it was that cheap.  Also wishing I had a use for the stuff.
Oh, and I hate Donald Trump with the acrid smoking stench of seven billion enormous tire fires and I hope he dies choking.

Dearest Georgie,

Was faced w/similarly frustrating situations in recent days.  Adhering to social distancing protocols, queued well over 5 min.at one establishment, only to be dismayed shelves were void of that additional 1k RND case of 5.56 NATO I was seeking.  As you may already know, when push comes to shove, 7-8K RNDS (on hand) doesn't amount to much more than a weekend of "plinking"  THEN over at Costco, those fascists were limiting customers to 1ea.  25 lb. bag of sugar! My bees (who planned well and persevered through a long Alaskan winter) will be less than thrilled their spring time 1:1 homemade nectar kick-starter may be rationed. Being severely allergic to stings, I DON'T need them pissed as the EpiPen expired 2 years back.

On the bright side, managed to stock up on some 10 mm auto, hens providing 10-12 eggs/day, there's around 50 lbs. of "blue on blue" potatoes in the garage and jars of pickled beets we grew. Freezers are well stocked with self-harvested moose, salmon, halibut, and chicken.

Dearest Georgie, as a daughter of the Blue Ridge Mountains/Foothills, (some time back you mentioned NC, apologies if mistaken) I'm surprised Foxfire wasn't required reading in prep school...or on the shelf in your library.  Methinks TDS may be clouding your ability to see the evils of dependency (especially upon .GOV) vs. the virtues of self reliance and voluntary association.   That said, I'm envious of your work from home arrangement.  Alas, was handed "travel authorization" papers stating my particular skillsets were vital to the economy...so I must cut this short and commence the 30 mi commute to the "rock pile of drudgery".

Hope the metripoliten-forage goes better for you next time and remember:  This too shall pass.  Learn from your exposed vulnerabilities aaaaaaaaaannnnnd BTFD!

Cheers.

Methinks you got a point there.  Methinks a lot of folks who have bought into the Suburban Heaven lifestyle model are gonna have to re-think.
Thing is, right now the problem isn't isolation--gas is the cheapest it's been in, like, forty years, I think--but the supply chain, which like everything else depends on people, and a lot of those people are either sick or in quarantine right now.
As far as depending on government, well, if you live in a community of any kind government of some stripe is a given.  These experiences have actually pushed me further towards socialism (not that I needed much of a push).  Way down where the cheese binds, "government" is nothing more or less than people working together, and I'd rather we were all inside that tent instead of most of us waiting outside it for the ones inside to TCB.
Life actually goes on.  Had dental surgery today.  Have had no solid food all day.  Husband™ made me delicious masala chai, and right now I'm waiting on my broth and noodles to be ready so I can take some more of that precious, precious painkilling dope and get some sleep.

A friend just sent me this. Is it apparently true.

A Dear friend contacted me today from London and was clearly distraught about this bill recently rushed through parliament. It's pure darkness

Coronavirus Bill (HC Bill 122)

Forced detention and isolation can be of anyone, including children, and for any amount of time.

Authorities can FORCEABLY take biological samples from your body. Your body becomes the property of the state.

There’s no clear access to legal rights from as-yet unidentified isolation facilities.

Powers last up to 2 years, with reviews every 6 months

Lockdown powers could prevent protests against measures.

State surveillance safeguards weakened.

Protections from forced detainment and treatment under Mental Health Act lowered.

Cremations can be enforced against personal and religious wishes.

Changes to the court system. Registration of deaths.

No inquests into suspicious deaths! No requirement for any medical certification for burials or cremations!

It also indeminfies the health service should they fail for what ever reason to provide care.

Only one medical 'officer' is required to sign off COMPULSORY TREATMENT ORDER.
Which means... you can be forced to accept medication, or held down and injected with whatever is seen fit. THAT is the biggest and worst threat to your own freedoms. Schedule8 Pt1.

Local Authorities will now be exempted from compliance with their duties under The Care Act 2014. Schedule 11.
So. If someone dies in police custody or any type of custody they can dispose of the body without any paperwork medical exam or certification or inquest.

Ah spring is in the air and you can smell the panic everywhere

Here in New England our local gun shop has started a brilliant media campaign inciting the fear that gun stores will be declared "non-essential".  Naturally business has tripled since as the cordite-sniffers came running in a gun-loving panic.

Here, it's Green Bay's finest that is being hardest hit in the stores.  Funny, given that symptoms do not include diarrhea.

It's the Apocalypse crowd doing their end of the world thing.  Strange that there's never a run on hand-held can openers.  In a real Apocalypse those things will be the most valuable items on earth.

Nah, people will still be waiting at McDonald's locked door...starving and emailing complaints to the manager.

"Take out only" restaurants in my corner of Hell are having their parking lots fill up with people hanging out and socializing while waiting for and eating their food, essentially turning them into stationary food trucks. My cop friend says he loves to break them up, rolling up and saying "anyone not waiting on food that is still here in 30 seconds is getting a ticket". It's more fun than an ICE raid. But the next day, same shit, different place. On Saturday, prime rib night at the Elks, there were more than 25 people hanging out in the parking lot, eating their "takeout" dinner with the same batch of codgers they saw every Saturday night for the last 65 years.
