Surprisingly many cultures view lighter skin as desirable.  Koreans and Indians (dothead not woo-woo) come to mind.  They're all the same race, so I'm guessing it may be that a darker skin was a connotation of having to toil in the sun all day, hence low class or caste.

True where I grew up in the old South, too - ladies used to be very careful not to get a tan, because that meant they were of lower class.  Same everywhere, I guess.

I guess some do prefer house-nigger-tan....


...but I also can appreciate a very dark, tribal-nigger-purple, too....

Yeah, as much as I like the pink, there's nothing like the skin on an asian or a dark black woman... smooth as silk... even white boys gotta shout.

Only in America can black people whiten their skin (bleach) to show their status while white people darken their skin (tanning salons) to show status. Are we all trying to be dot-heads?
