The fate of the turbine car was decided even before it was built, as Chrysler never intend to pay the import tax on the Ghia body. They lent it for test drives and never sold one.

The car that started the horsepower craze (and maybe the pony car craze)

1963 Ramcharger.  Available with either 413 Max Wedge or the new 426 Hemi

Ran the quarter in an unheard of 12 flat out of the box.  Of course the windows weren't glass and wouldn't roll-down, and there was no heater - but who needs that shit?

Yeah except that by the time they made the movies the trans am stock engines had become such gutless wonders that the car for getting pussy had become a car for pussies.

When they made the second movie they found that the stock cars Pontiac had delivered were incapable of even performing basic stunts and burnouts.

It became common practice when purchasing a new trans am to also order a pre 1974 455 engine from a speed shop.

My friend went even further when he brought a 'new 78 t top black and gold T/A. He  already had a race tuned 500 hp monstor hanging in the engine lift when he drove it home from the dealer. It was pretty funny to dismantle a brand new pricey car with no mileage on the odometer.

Sorry... I got bored and quit reading... but I figured I'd put in my first car story and make you all jealous.

My first car was a 1968 Mustang Coupe.  It was white with black bucket seats, with a 302 bored out to a 330.... she'd get up and go, lemme tell you.

Until my dad blew out the transmission.

Of course, it also lacked door locks, had the original carpeting (and that was NOT a good thing) and the gas gauge didn't work... so I got caught past curfew one night because I had to call for help when the car wouldn't start.  Turns out I didn't do my math right when I filled 'er up.

Probably.

But if you think a car out of the local dealer (per your upper illustration), on skinny bias ply tires, could ever put enough torque on the pavement to run a 12-second quarter, I've got a great home mortgage and equity cashout deal for you. The Dodge factory cars were even less stock than the contemporary NASCAR jobs, starting with the lengthened wheelbase.

Do I look foolish??  But don't under-estimate the money made off of a sleeper.   Many an Evo have over estimated the effect of a 4wd launch over a 3rd gear pull.

It remains all about the torque curve (HP be damned), flat curve = max acceleration.

Dodge Hemi - the most proven super engine ever built, fondly known as the elephant.

What did come from testing the aircraft engine was just another Chrysler accomplishment that went by unheralded but was nevertheless noted later. The inverted V-16 was conservatively rated at 2,500 horsepower, and Chrysler has always been known for under rating their engines.
For testing, a P-47 Thunderbolt was selected. Introduced in 1943, the P-47 was the largest and heaviest single seater in the Air Force inventory at the time. It was powered by a huge 2,800 cubic inch radial engine that developed 2,300 horsepower. It gave the 40 foot wing span plane a top speed of 439 miles an hour at 15,000 feet.
Some modifications were necessary to accommodate the long V-16. When done, the slimmed down nose actually helped reduce the drag produced by the big round radial. Preliminary testing showed promise. Gingerly the big fighter was coaxed slowly into higher altitudes and higher speeds. Finally the go ahead was given for an all out test. At 15,000 feet, the huge plane, under the Chrysler V-16's power, broke the 500 mile an hour barrier. No one thought it was possible for a piston engine to achieve that speed in level flight.
Thanks to accurate radar timing, it is beyond doubt how powerful that engine truly was. Flat out, it pulled the huge P-47 along at 504 miles an hour. Conventional wisdom at that time said that the V-16 was making at least 3,000 horsepower, and likely closer to 3,500!
Just to be sure, the test P-47 went out the next day with a different test pilot and again level at 15,000 feet, went through the 500 mile an hour mark. Hand shakes and elation went all around. However, the engine never went into production. The important thing to keep in mind about this engine is that it was a Hemi headed, push rod valve activated type. It survived the war, and now is on display at the Walter P. Chrysler Museum in Auburn Hills, Michigan. [According to Bob Nist, a Chrysler ad in Space Smithsonian mentioned three of these engines made; one is at the Smithsonian, and the third, according to Don Wagner, is in the New England Air Museum in Connecticut.]

Jenna and Pamela hike down their pants, turn their bare butts at the cake from approximately 2 inches each one from different side , then simultaneously "beat the drum" on the cake, trying to blow the candles, as if attempting to compete each against the other when it comes to smell, rancidity, loudness and how long the fart lasts.

The funny part about that ad is that Ginger Lacey flew a Hawker Hurricane, not a Spitfire! (The HH is also a beautiful aircraft, though admittedly not nearly as lithe as the Spitfire).

Even though the Japanese hit the right formula at the time they had another thing going for them....  An extremely large but relatively inexpensive workforce...  They've lost the relatively inexpensive part of that formula and turned those honors over to the Koreans who are running with it.....   I can't think of a single Korean car that I'd own, but I still like how they're bettering their way of life through capitalism and Western thought....
