Comrade Stoller comparing partying-never-should-have-enrolled-in-college-to-begin-with student loan debtors to the Bonus Army...and Shearer let it slide!?!?  More pretentious BS for pretentious BSers

Was receptive to the interview until he spewed that nonsense. Another fine example how IV grads are circling the bowl.

Our "public" school systems stopped teaching the trades, when all the trade jobs left the country, and instead brainwashed the students into believing they all need a college education.  Businesses joined into the conspiracy by suggesting that they preferred all their entry-level employees to have a degree in the mistaken belief that, because you graduated college, you were educable.  We only have to look at the example of one orange Penn’s Wharton School graduate in 1968 to see the fallacy of that idea.

I don't know, maybe I'm just a good little drone, but I attended a state school, chose a field that was expanding, got a degree, got a job after graduation, was student debt free and bought my first house within 2 years of graduating. Maybe I did it wrong? Maybe I should have taken that extra $50k a year they would offer you for living expenses and moved into a 1000 sq ft apartment in a high rise next to college instead of a rented basement a mile away. Or rolled in the gold plated meal plan instead of living on my $100 a month food budget.

College should never be sold as "free". It should be sold as an investment. You put money in, hoping you will get more out. Not just a place for the taxpayers to pay to to go find yourself for the best part of a decade.

Yeah, but you went to college, what, like 50 years ago?  In 1982 Ohio State in-state tuition was $1,155 back when a part-time job could actually earn you some money, now it's $11,084 when part-time job salaries suck and you have to fight grownups to get the job anyway.  The fact that no private colleges seem to be in danger of going out of business when they're charging $50,000+ tells everything we need to know about the current system.

I paid $8k a year for tuition, maybe another $2k in fees and books. It was the early 90's.

The problem with colleges is the same as the problem with medicine. The people paying the bill don't know the real cost and are so disconnected from it that they have to pay whatever made up number they are given to access the resources. So the provider feels no price pressure from the customer. In college every student pays the same tuition, though a classics degree doesn't cost what a physics degree costs to provide. Administrative and non-academic overhead is 70+% of total tuition cost because colleges compete for students, so they _have_ to gold plate everything to get enough students in to pay for it all. The students are pushed into loans for insane amounts with no declaration of major and no checking on grades. Banks are happy to loan $50k a year to someone skating through a fluff degree with C-minuses because when Joe Slacker does finally bail on his student loans, the taxpayer pays them off and the parent has usually put their assets on the line for the living expenses loan. The banks charge open market interest rates on a govt secured loan, so they are happy to push as much money at you as you can carry out of the bank.

Unfortunately, it all stems from everyone's inability to say "No" to "free" things. Loans, like cons, only get you into trouble if you are greedy. Without greed, there is no trouble. I went to college with a $500/month budget and that covered a shitty apt shared with 3-4 other guys, crappy food and whatever transportation I was trying to keep going at the time, mostly bicycles, though there I had a 71 VW my senior year because I made good money during the summers. I also worked on campus, off campus and every vacation at home when I could get a good gig.
