I remember reading somewhere that the flag's colors were inspired when Gen. Somebodyorother was in a battle with - I'm assuming - the Spanish during the war for independence. As his men fought valiantly against the superior Spanish forces, a flock of flamingos or some other scarlet colored bird flew overhead. He took that as a sign and they kicked the Spaniards' asses.

On an entirely different note, my first boyfriend was a Peruvian.
