I can see that the goal was to deliver a quick, relatively painless death to the sheep which was scheduled to be the guest of honor at that day's feast. It was an utter failure at being quick and painless, but it wasn't wantonly cruel for cruelty's sake.

Laughter is a natural psychological reaction in uncomfortable situations.
I'd wager that a 9mm was out of the question due to overly restrictive ROE.
