Kinda interesting what the numbers are really like...
Nothing like keeping people in fear, is there?

Who gives a shit about heart disease or cancer? You can't sell pills or soap for either of them. Both are inevitable outcomes of purchasing the majority of their sponsor's products. Do you talk about road incident fatality news right before showing another ad of a car going around a corner sideways followed by some beer commercials?

Everybody not trying to make money off of homicides and terrorism should.  Heart disease is almost wholly preventable and we're learning that much of cancer is too.  But they know people read or watch the news for the shock effect, not to be preached to.

You walk into a room with 9 other random people and 6 of you will die from heart disease or cancer, walk into a room of 99 random people and one of you will die from a homicide, walk into a room with 9,999 random people and one of you will die from terrorism.

I've opted for the Cardio-vascular/Cancer route, trying to add a little alcoholic diabetes in there also but no luck so far...

I tell people that if it's in the news, don't worry about it. The very definition of "news" is "something that hardly ever happens." It's when something isn't in the news, when it's so common that it's no longer news -- car crashes, domestic violence -- that you should start worrying.
