Some people think this shows amazing courage and faith; I think everyone in this family unit needs to be sterilized for gross stupidity.

"When she regained consciousness, she wrapped clothes around her bleeding abdomen and asked her 6-year-old son, Benito, to run for help. "

What kind of freaky twitch do you think that kid has...

The kind you get when mommy drinks isopropyl alcohol.

I unfortunately have to agree with Fnord. How does a Mexican peasant even know to cut into her own stomach in order to extract a baby?

Although it is named for Cesar, I personally believe that particular procedure was done multiple times before the Europeans first arived on this continent.  It is quite possible that the Alco-section has been passed down from generation to generation.  I'm not saying its right, but what is that saying about the mother of invention?  (no, not The Mothers of Invention... ; >)

I believe the saying goes, "Excrutiating pain for over 12 hours is the mother of surgical invention."  It sounds like they probably both would have died if she hadn't done it, though, not that I'd particularly recommend it.  As for how she figured out that you can do a cesarean, it's not exactly rocket science where the baby is.  It'd be pretty easy to figure out that a baby can be cut out, the hard part would be not accidentally dicing it up and killing the mother.

I imagine little Benito would have a few mental scars after that little discovery...

The lady was so far from medical help she may as well have been alone on the moon at that moment.
Take a hundred women from our safe, structured, and technically advanced world and I bet 99 of them would fold in the same situation. She should get a gold medal for stepping up and doing what her instincts told her to do.
Drinking the rubbing alcohol? Perhaps it has something to do with the fact that she has no education and is effectively living a few hundred years in the past in that shitty little village.

My, my. People might confuse a couple of these remarks for actually defending the woman's actions. Is this High Street, or OurBodiesOurSelves.org? I liked Tojo's remark, "Excruciating pain for over 12 hours is the mother of surgical invention." Indeedy, it be.

But yeah, I suppose I would agree that alternate forms of debabination are more or less intuitive. I'm just surprised Fnord didn't take the "Why didn't she just run across the border like every other knocked-up Mexican?" approach (yes, yes, I know Oaxaca is at the other end). Mine was just a rhetorical question, really. I might have used a couple of those twelve hours seeking medical attention, or sent the kid out for 'help' a tad sooner. She got to a 'health assistant' at some point, and eventually a hospital, so it's not as if there wasn't one to be had.

Ah, the wonders of Latin machismo. 12 hours of Excruciating pain, kitchen knife in hand and still no thought of sending little Benito to interupt his daddy's bender at the local cantina.
