It was a joke on a lot of B movies, which is why certain points were intentionally cheesy.

Both sides of this argument are missing the point. This film was a brilliant gem of a story--especially for the times--which was squandered and ruined by Carpenter in ways that still make me want to tear my hair. "Rowdy" Roddy Piper? Fuck me running.
