I've actually seen this condition before (not in person, thankfully). It seems like the kind of thing that would kill an infant quickly, but surprisingly, some afflicted individuals (according to the oracles of Wiki) have lived to their teens and beyond. Why parents would not kill the things immediately is obviously a testament to their fortitude...or their desire to make a quick buck at the local carny.
