I bought a piece of capital equipment that's eligible for accelerated depreciation toy for Christmas. A liquid cooled 6 core i7 beast with 16 GB and a GTX 560/2GB. OS/Apps are loaded on a 120GB OCZ SSD, data gets 2/2/2TB on SATA3/USB3/USB2. I've finally got a use for VMware, and have spun up XP, W7, S2003 and S2008 virtual machines.  I can run 3 or 4 concurrently, and if I'm stingy with logical processors I can run up to 11 of them. I've installed Office Pro, Visio, Project, Adobe CS5 Production in virtuals and things are looking golden.

Geek heaven, right?

No. It comes with 4 fuck holes and they're all too small!

What do you expect from a country that can't even put nipples on a shark woman?

I see your problem.  You need one of these:

Then you can use those holes for the plumbing God intended them to have.  It was too small for the car, but more than the next computer I put together will ever need.

I do hope you have a UPS. I have APC's on my server and all my networking equipment.

Opseoc, Does VMware handle handle graphics well? Does DirectX work?

Depends on what product you are using, and how you are accessing the VMs.

Fusion & Workstation handle 3D well, sound output is as expected, but recording sucks.

ESXi doesn't do 3D in the native console, but if you use View & PCoIP to access the VMs over a LAN, you are also in good shape.  I've streamed HD video that way with no noticeable video artifacts or sound degradation.

But if you really want to see some cool shit that VMware is doing, google AppBlast.  It is the way of the future.

And yes, I do get my paycheck from VMware.

I'm a total noob with VM (I'm running Workstation 7).  I did notice that the graphics adapter lists as "standard VGA" or some such shit on my virtuals, but that's a lie as I was getting full resolution in Premiere and AE.

I can't wait to find out how transparent networking is.  I'd like be able to run a domain server and mixed OS clients on a single box for a test LAN, and this looks very doable.

Excellent!  Someone I can bug the shit out of when I have inane questions and don't feel like reading the manual!  But seriously, I am very impressed with the product.  If you worked for Adobe, then I actually would be bugging the shit out of you, but only for a license key for Master Suite.

Not me. I'm quite sure that more than 1% of the population is underemployed and live in their moms basement.

I first got turned on to VMware years back when working for an IBM partner.  It was the coolest thing I had seen in a while.  The scenario you describe is something I have used it for countless times.  You can create multiple private networks and use something like FreeSco to create bridges & routers.

If you ever mess with ESXi, you can get pretty freaky with the networking, simulating low speed WAN links etc.

Feel free to ping me with questions.  the more people who drink the koolaid......

Good point, I noticed that one too. But then again, the old system also was predicated on the assumption that the 99% were decent and law-abiding citizens.

Yes.  All one percenters build computers with used car parts.

Yeah, sorry, I hit holiday overload early this year, like somewhere back in August.
