I have been reading about this nonsense for more than a week, and I am heartily sick of it.

1) Chik-Fil-A has always been a business run by Xtians.  They have always closed their stores on Sundays when they could have been making money.  They do not discriminate in hiring (that anyone has caught them at) and they do not practice their arcane Xtian rites during working hours (see previous parenthetical).  The business is their property and they have every right to run it as they see fit, as long as they obey the laws of the land.  I have no problem with this.

2) I do have a problem when a business pours tons of money into political campaigns/activist organizations with which I disagree.  The owners of Chik-Fil-A have done this; they have made campaign contributions to bigots precisely because they are bigots.  I do not knowingly give my money to businesses that stick their dicks into politicians.

3) For those of you who don't already know this, their damn chicken tastes like overseasoned boogers and it gives you the squirts.  To hell with that shit.

I give them mad prop's for closing on Sundays and Holidays - I for one am getting sick of the 24x7 shit.  (Except for when I forget to buy my beer  or cigarettes)

Threatening to block a restaurant based on the the owner's statements, no matter how vile, breaks the Golden Rule as well as the First Amendment. But before the debate goes any farther, since when do corporations have opinions?

Corporations with smart executives know better than to express anything but the most PC opinion.  Unfortunately there are plenty of corporations where the executive staff see fit to use it as a platform to spout whatever their personal feelings on anything might be, even if the majority of the employees think just the opposite.....

I'm in Barcelona for a couple of months (and enjoying it immensely, I might add). This international city, an important center for arts, industry, and banking, all but closes down on Sundays. Restaurants and bars are open,  as are some stores (mostly of the convenience variety) and public transit, albeit on a reduced schedule. It's lovely.

Wander around on a Sunday afternoon and entire families are out in the parks, large groups of kids are hanging out, old folks are chatting on benches, and countless more are promenading and drinking and cruising and flirting in the city's thousands of plazas, both large and small.

I remember when blue laws in the US began to go down, dismantled state by state, and feeling a little sad about their disappearance. Now, I'm reminded how important it is for society as a whole to just have a day off, a little collective downtime.

I kinda miss those blue laws.

Scew that nostalgic claptrap. I get what we middle age men say when they realize we need to tone it down a bit and enjoy it before it is gone, but really have you lost your roots? We railed against the Blue Laws when I was young. Those same statutes got more in the way of enjoying a fine sunday buzz in the country with a willing lass then some cock-blocking female relation.

Plus we learned by the time we were 16 that the entire Pennsatucky blue laws were kept in place as a way to make some fat cat liquor distributors rich as beer barons off our dime. That never did sit well. And my best friend's dad was the eastern regions holder of the Budweiser licence. You had to buy from him or not get any at all in that state. Dry Sundays were the moral excuse for keeping the status quo, just the tip of the graft iceberg.Think John and Cindy McCains family business and why the congress  has never voted to allow a free market in the beer trade.

Nice way to spend the summer. Going over to Palma by chance? If so give a heads up. I could recommend a few things you may want to experience.

Well, OK, I could have been a tad more clear. I certainly wouldn't want the religious overtones that accompany a culturally-mandated day off. Hell, I just came back from a so-so midday meal at a Catalan restaurant a few blocks from my apartment where, like nearly everyone else in the place, I enjoyed a nice glass of plain ol' red wine, which was part of my selection from the menú del día.

I remember quite well the rush on Sundays to head across the border to Oklahoma to buy beer, as silly a pursuit as one could ask, and I remember, too, the Arkansas cops waiting on their side of the border to catch those perps who dared defile the Lord's day by smuggling demon rum across state lines. I remember, as well, the ritual of hitting all the private clubs I wanted to go to which served mixed drinks, in order to buy my memberships, once I was 21.

Fuck all that.

But a day where everything just sort of slows down, where everyone has a chance to relax along with the majority of other folks, isn't a bad thing. I think Chik-Fil-A is full of shit, personally, but I won't begrudge them closing on Sundays. Good for them on that one, even if they are assholes.

Not doing much traveling for several more weeks, other than the occasional day trip to places like Tarragona, Girona, Lleida, and Sitges. I'm enjoying just getting to know Barcelona and having a routine here for a while. In September, I'm thinking of heading down to Morocco, though, and possibly to Corsica and/or Marseilles. Or I may just head off someplace completely random.

Hey Taint.  Ever check out the Costa del Sol area; or too many Brits?

Shit, even I can answer that one.  Costa Del Sol is a blight on the Med.  it is the British equivalent of Panama City Beach, FL.

You missed the point entirely, I wasn't lamenting the archaic booze laws - I was referring to more of the Bavarian model.  The stores and factories all close at 3pm on Saturday but the booze and food flow on and most of the population is focused on hanging with friends and family.

You oughta try it sometime, it's a wonderful thing.

Ok, here's another point I'm not clear on: If Chick-Fil-A is dead set against homosexuality then why is their business based on an animal that reproduces by ass sex? Before you start your picky pedantic tirades, remember that very few of the hillbillies and fundamentalists who are most supportive Of C-F-A never learned to spell cloaca in their homeschoolin' days.

Edit: What does the 'A' stand for, and why does whatever it is have to be filled by a chick in a corporation run entirely on Christian principles?

Oh the irony of someone bashing Chick-Fil-A yet doesn't understand the company's name.

Instead of bashing them for their insane Christian beliefs, the bigger problem of the thuggish behavior where liberals demand political loyalty as a requirement to operate a business or live in a city, that has more in common with the 20th-century regimes that required business owners to have party cards and excluded anyone not considered loyal to the entrenched ruling class.

They told me if I voted for McCain, people would cheer government attempts to ban businesses that dissented from Dick Cheney's views... and they were right.

Thanks Taint! If you hadn't posted that I would never have known about that sludge-metal band from Wales.

This has turned out to be a win/win situation for everyone. I'd like to encourage liberal mayors to stop posturing, and for everyone who opposes gay marriage to eat at Chick-fil-A often; every day if possible. Load up on those oily fried sandwiches, greasy carb-bomb fries and don't forget to avail yourself of free refills of dee-licious flavored corn syrup for breakfast lunch and dinner.

I'm flabbergasted at the stupidity that asshole displayed.  That poor girl is just a low level employee who has nothing to do with setting policy and didn't deserve that kind of bullshit.  Decent people don’t do things like this.  But then again, in college when I worked for a bookstore with an upfront radical image, I had to deal with stupid people who got off harassing the company’s employees rather than just quietly taking their business elsewhere.
