Boy, I can't upvote this statement enough.

My teen son has has discovered Mary Jane and won't let go.  My wife and several of her friends have said that we should get the police involved. As if sending a teen to spend the night in jail would help.  Luckily I was able to talk my wife down and explain that we'd need to hire our own lawyer, and that son would loose any chance to get student loans with even a misdemeanor drug violation, and that he'd not be taken away for very long before the city would send him right back.

My solution is to find him mentors. Work-a-day people.  HeE's out back rebuilding our deck with a carpenter friend.  On Monday, he'll head over to a friend that has an auto body shop (the auto body guy teaches him Kung Fu when business is slack).

My wife thinks I am the most slack parent ever and church and jail are the only answer. Church, right? He made weed friends at their youth group.  Convenient, huh?

Maybe you could work out a rent-to-own agreement with a local for-profit prison. You could get some peace of mind and a little extra cash as well as cutting down some important bills. The corporation would get more tax money, and your son could learn to hide his weed in a more professional manner while he's making new friends. There is no downside here!

Even though the fuzz won't have shit to book him with, even if Mom signs all the voluntary statements she wants, his name will still go on the hot list and in 5 years when he gets pulled over for having a tail light out, it will trigger a full frisk and probably tossing his car.

If I was him would turn right around and turn her in for tax evasion. By the time they are done rooting around in her returns I'm sure they will find something.

My first weed experience was at a church camp! You're doing the right thing, getting involved with your son rather than calling in the police, which would present him with loan, education, professional licensing, and employment problems for the rest of his life. One of my step-grandchildren appears to have discovered weed recently. I'm minding my own business, because he's a good kid and I'm sure it's just a phase, like it was for his older siblings. His parents have been there before, and whatever they did worked because the older kids all turned out well.

What's an "upvote"?

Is this a Friendster/Facebooker thing?

reddit.com basically a souped-up forum. You can create your own sub (think rule 34 for sub-boards).

I also know my son has been hanging out on reddit.com/r/trees.
