They call it crumple zones, I call it cheap bumpers.  My 20 year old truck has aftermarket bumpers front and rear.  The first time I high centered it I dented the bumpers with the jack and got rid of the crappy factory bumpers.  Now when I hit Japanese cars a little black spray paint fixes mine good as new.
