Of course.  a baton is appropriate.

Not that I think this is right, and I certainly don't know all the actual circumstances leading up to this moment (despite the narrative provided on the YouTube page), but a baton is on the low end of the "police response" scale these days.

What I saw was a cop using a baton as a leverage tool.  At no time in that video did he swing the baton and strike the kid.  The only time I saw the baton impact the kid was when the cop was trying to get the kid's hands off the baton as he was trying pull back.

Had the kid stopped when first approached by the officer rather than try to walk away (per the YouTube narrative), I seriously doubt there would have been this kind of escalation.  The secondary responding officers weren't there because of the kid, they were there because of the shrieking "he's just a fucking kid" person, and the gathering crowd of people resulting from that.

It is necessary in a modern society to not ignore the authorities, even if it's just jaywalking.  And that wasn't a kid, that was a young man who should have known better and had better manners.  Hell it probably started out as just a scolding but you know how teenage boys can be.

I wish I could find the W C Fields clip of this, but a quote will have to suffice. Use your memory or your imagination...

Agatha Sousé: Don't you dare strike that child!

Egbert Sousé: She's not gonna tell ME I don't love her!
