This was a front page NYTimes story ten years ago and was considered old news when I flogged the same banana doom in 1984.

All it means is plant breeders still haven't a clue how to spare wealthy plantation owners from unpalatable ruin. Bananas themselves will persevere and cost lots more.

We still have the root stock for plantains.  We can start over any time we want.
