I read a news story decades ago about a group of Japanese kids sitting on the flight line in their rickety excuses for an airplane, ready to fly off on their Kamikaze mission when word came that the war ended.  There was a huge debate by the officers about whether to go ahead and send them anyway but they finally decided, fuck it, let the kids live.
