Tilda Swinton is the odds on favorite to be the next Doctor Who (after Peter Capaldi vacates at the end of the upcoming season). I love "~", but if they want to keep me happy they better make her a little bit gay, and give her a female sidekick.

Too young looking, sexist at the very surface.  Needs to be obvious middle aged and chubby.

It's almost never who the British press think it's going to be.

I think it should be Sue Perkins.  She's funny and has that David Tenant vibe about her.

Well they're gonna tick their Liberal boxes anyway they can aside from actually coming up with quality female/gay protanganists.  Apparently it's so difficult to create a character like Ms. Fisher that remaking a male character is a better option.

Stupidly it's not "Look at how amazing we are" but instead "we can be that also all we have to do is re-gender the existing character".  Fuckers don't even realize when they insult themselves.

Anybody, ANYBODY, except Idris Elba.  I mean, a toaster, anything.

No, no, no...Idris Elba is the new James Bond. You can't be James Bond and Doctor Who at the same time (but if you could, I'm sure they would pick Idris Elba to do it).

I thought he was Roland Deschain in the new Dark Tower movies.  Which everybody including Stephen King thought sort of resembled an older Spaghetti Western Clint Eastwood.

He is, he is.  (And McConaughey-hey-hey is gonna be the Man in Black.  I don't know whether to laugh or cry.  I actually very much admire both men as actors*, but they are so very far away from my mental picture of the DT series that it's close to painful.)
But Elba is also being majorly talked up as the next Bond.

Randall Flag needs to be a Brit.  Only they can bring the level of urbane evil needed.

In all seriousness (and I wasn't being serious) I think Idris Elba would be a terrible Doctor Who. But my guess is whomever they pick will be something of a nerd, as per usual.

And although he's frequently mentioned as a possible Bond replacement, I'm not completely sold that Elba would nail that role either. I agree with Baywolfe's initial point, however, that the guessers will almost certainly guess wrong, and the choice of Doctors will surprise us all.

King was very explicit regarding race in that series, re-writing art to check liberal boxes is insulting.  It should be Clint with a younger stand in for early flash backs.

Roland is ancient when the story begins...

Yep 100% agree. I even pictured Clint in my head while reading them WAAAAYYYY before there was ever talk of a movie.

Who would you pick for Susan/Odetta?

DREAM CASTING BEGINS NOW.
Roland Deschain - Wes Bentley, now in his late 30s, bears a near-terrifying resemblance to Eastwood from certain angles.  I've seen him be terrible and I've seen him be truly great; I think he would be great as long as he has a good director.
Young Roland - Nicholas Hoult
Eddie - Aaron Paul
Susannah/Odetta/Detta - Zoe Saldana.  No one else comes close.
Jake - I don't actually give a fuck as long as the kid chosen is a decent actor.  (In my head I see a young Brad Renfro, but of course he'd be too old if he wasn't dead.)  If they want to make the cast more diverse, why not make this character a POC?
The Man in Black/The Good Man/Walter/Randall Flagg - The only perfect actor for this role, Alan Rickman, is sadly deceased.  I think Michael Fassbender with a good dye job would be awesome, though.  Honestly?  Idris Elba would probably blow me away in this role.
There are lots and lots of other memorable characters, but they don't spend as much time on the page.  Whoever cast the Harry Potter movies was a goddamned genius; let that person cast the rest of Mid-World.

No doubt about that.

Roland: Clint Eastwood
Eddie:   Lenny Kravitz (sp?)
Odetta: I am stumped (heh, get it? stumped?) Maybe Zoe Kravitz
Jake:    I don't know any kid actors.
The Man in Black: Walken

Eddie is white, Oddetta addresses him as such several times.  No wiggle room there.

To be brave one of the villages must be vast majority black and the repressed persons in the village must be white.

Until you cast a white person as the oppressed under a POC you are just a closet racist anyway...

You're right. I actually wasn't thinking about Lenny being black. (but had his daughter as Odetta because my brain is turning to poo poo)

Nicholas Cage should be the voice of Blaine.

Oy's voice should sound exactly like Scooby Doo.

She calls EVERYBODY a White Mo'Fo'.  They just going to leave that out now?  "Hey Roland you White..... you Black..... you Mo' Fo'!"

Comes back down to why is it even a discussion?  We have lizard people in this story - that about covers diversity for you.  Let's not try to make things fit into a checklist.  Outside of a few main characters who's physical features have been clearly defined the door is open to optimum casting.
