I buy them mostly for the rinds to make pickles. The meat is bland and often nearly desiccated in store bought versions. I've taken to buying side-of-the-road when I can but they are usually only slightly more juicy.

...which for the last few decades has meant struggling to find a watermelon that isn't seedless so you can introduce that to the kids. Watching the pure joy on the face of an 8 year old who's been told he can spit for fun.

I moved a lot, once upon a time, and I learned early on the quickest way to assemble a moving team is watermelon punch, marinated in Everclear. Heavens, it's tasty and expeditious.

We had a small grocery store half a block away from the house I lived in when I was in high school, and they would leave their watermelons on the loading dock outside to ripen. I should also mention that said store was directly across the street from the police station.
I can personally attest to the fact that stolen watermelons are much sweeter than the ones you buy.
