Interesting Stats here:

This kinda goes against the way things are portrayed in the media.
It seems that whatever form the media takes (left, right, centrist), "If it bleeds, it leads" seems to be the mantra. I believe on the whole that the media/state likes the concept of ruling by fear.
Just a thought.

I get that as the prime argument as to why people need guns. "Just wait until they break into your home, you'll wish you had a gun then." I usually respond with, "Where the hell do you live? I'm over 60 and nobody has ever broke into my home."
We certainly have enjoyed the Long Peace since WWII with no wars between the great economic powers of the era.
I'm also surprised every time I'm reminded that Suicides account for six-in-ten gun deaths in America and that, if you are shot, it's usually by somebody you know and not the "mysterious stranger". We do need to find a way to prevent nut jobs from opening up on the general public whether it be schools, movie theaters, or shopping centers.

I have little problem with guns, and people having them in their homes. The bugaboo of the AR-15 is hilarious. More people die by knives than rifles in this country, but ooooh, scary black gun. Half my neighbors have them, yeah, I live in the suburbs about 20 miles from wilderness now days. Some have them for hunting, home defense, whatever. All of them are stable good people much like the 16 million or so people who own that particular gun.
What worries me about guns are the idiots who buy them, but were never trained. When I grew up the NRA actually did that for the local schools (in the countryside where we often lived)... They had civics classes as well, imagine that. All pre-70's. The NRA got fucked in 1977, but that is another story.
Kids in the country always had guns. Hell, I wandered around with a 22 when I was 11 years old, just like everyone else I knew.
Fear is an amazing thing.

Violent crime is down precipitously, but police budgets are higher than ever. If it wasn't for the War on Drug Users they would have to move detectives to traffic.
The problem is with entitled attitudes and rampant narcissism, plus a good salting of the mentally unhinged. But what law do those people follow?
