I found out recently that my Grandfather's unit where he was a Sapper/Engineer was the one unit with the longest length of frontline duty in WW1 in the US forces. Found a report of him, along with his brother in a book about it as well.
It certainly explains his craziness/peculiarities when I was a kid.

Too young to drink, too square to smoke, and just fuddy enough to kick it a little bit old school with an M14 DMR in the land of dust, corn, and improbably long shovels.
Rifle was a Winchester by-God M14 with FA selector lever removed and plugged. The action was bedded to a McMillan M2A fiberglass stock sporting a Harris 9-13" bipod up front and my trusty V-tac on the sling swivels. Smoke tube was a Kreiger mid-weight match model, and the looky-bit on top was a Leupold Mark 4 M3 fixed 10x42mm with ballistic BDC turrets.
