For once, unfortunately, they're being literal.

"When he put me in a chokehold and I started to black out, I thought I was going to die," the victim said. "I wanted to survive, so I did what he told me."

The attacker raped and sodomized her, slit her eyelids, and threw bleach into her eyes in an attempt to blind her. He also forced her to ingest a massive dose of painkillers that caused liver failure.

Robert Williams is charged with kidnapping, rape, arson and other counts. The 31-year-old ex-convict refused to come to court Friday, and the judge refused to delay the trial because of the defendant's absence.

Someone needs to 'splainme how it is that he's not automatically back in prison on remand and available for trial appearances at all times. I'd really hate to see this one appealed on the basis that he didn't 'face his accuser.'

I'm guessing he's in custody, but refused to be transported from the jail to the courthouse.

For those who say the death penalty is not a deterrent, I'd answer it's because you're doing it wrong.   Death is not a punishment, we all receive that gift... it's the several days of torture and infliction of pain prior to death that provides the deterrent.  It should be televised to California High School students.  Hey, if it saves even one life... right?

Exactly.

The 24-year-old woman detailed her ordeal for jurors Friday, but did not have the opportunity to face her accused attacker. A Correction Department spokesman said ex-convict Robert Williams, 31, refused to leave jail to hear the woman he is accused of raping, sodomizing and trying to burn to death on April 13, 2007.
