That's true...there's probably a continuum.  I'm not sure what would be on the top, though.  My ex's grandmother always complained that her British mother-in-law didn't like her because she was of German farmer stock.  Here in Chicago the Irish weren't white enough when they first moved here (of course through breeding and corruption they went on to take over the city and earn their white).  Now the Irish look down on the first generation Poles and Russians.  The British would argue that the Greeks, Albanians, Bulgarians, Hungarians and Sicilians aren't white.  But Britain has plenty of white trash in the industrial north.

I'll take fnord's word for it that all of his relatives are pure white and all upstanding citizens, but that certainly puts him in the minority in white America since I've never met a white person who didn't have a few skeletons in thefamily tree, be it criminals, crooks, scufflaws, hooligans or scalliwags, or questionable ethnic intermixing.

They needed to hide all of the evidence of their massive civilization with stone houses and iron tools before the Europeans arrived, and so they struck a deal with God.  They traded their whiteness for the ability to make it look like they'd been average run-of-the-mill native people all along.
