I so hope this turns out to be true.

Not only would it probably seal the election, but I'd truly love to see this pair campaign together.

Seal it for Obama, you mean? It would be interesting to see who the conservatives are less likely to vote for: the black guy who looks like he should have the wrong religion, or the white guy who actually does have the wrong religion. My money's on the actual infidel.

I think the pendulum's finally on swing as far as "the Right" is concerned.

The churchies seem to be finally getting disgusted with the way they've been used..."Their" politicians have been making promises to them since Reagan, or earlier, to change (and make) policy to reflect religious ideology, and it has NEVER happened.  The more secular righties are severely embarrassed by all the cockups their choices have made over lo these many years of Republican primacy in Washington.

Even though the Democratic party is, admittedly, a pathetic Charlie Foxtrot these days, the Republican party seems to be even more of a shambles.  A McCain/Romney ticket would be such an appropriate emblem for the state of American conservatism.

But what I'm looking forward to are the campaign fumbles, sound bites and unspeakably awkward photo ops!  Neither of these men can think on their feet worth a wet fart--whenever they're asked a question they haven't been prepped for, the reactions are golden--and have you seen Romney's family?

I'm not sure I agree that the religious right is about to jump ship. I recently saw some documentary on either HBO or Showtime that was downright scary. The documentary is done by Nancy Pelosi's daughter and is about the mindset of the religious right. It seems their fervor against the left is stronger than ever.

Oh, I have no doubt that the religious right hates America.  That'll never change, unless they get to take over the country and set up their own theocracy-dictatorship.  But I think they're getting tired of being the Republicans' political bitch, used and then discarded, every election.  I think they're starting to disconnect, psychologically, from the political process, from the belief that they can effect the changes they want through politics and elections.

If McCain does choose Romney, it'll probably be as an attempt to placate the churchies and get their support; and that's another reason I'd love to see it happen, because IMO it would be a major misstep.  The problem with religious nuts is that they're inflexible--if you don't follow their line to the letter, you're in league with Satan--and I don't think that many of them are behind Romney.  Meanwhile, every conservative and fence-sitter who isn't motivated by religion will be turned off.

But mostly I want it to happen for the lulz.

Amem to that, sister.

I grew up attending a "charismatic" church. Lets just say if they were any more faithful, there would be snakes involved.

It was enough to scare me off organized religion for the rest of my life.

My brother in law still has his "burn satan burn" Christian concert t-shirt....

This reminded me of a wrinkle I had totally forgotten about:  Some evangelicals are going "left," focusing on social issues like poverty, the environment, etc. and rejecting most of the positions of the traditional evangelical right.

I've been seeing and hearing little rumbles like this for months.

I think that voting block will be counter-balanced by old white democrats who would never vote for a black man.

If you think about it, Christianity is inherently left-wing. I certainly couldn't picture Jesus commanding a war against a poor country, or neglecting the poor in his own flock.

Also, if Romney is VP, the Mormons will vote in droves.

Yeah, but what it's actually about has nothing to do with its practice among the insane conservatives. What they believe is more of an arbitrary set of rules--the important thing is that everybody agrees on those rules completely.

If the mormons go out for romney, it'll only have a real impact on the vote in Utah, which he probably would have won anyway. Same number of votes in the electrical college, whether he wins by one point or by thirty.

For months, I've been telling myself that the silver lining to this trainwreck of an administration would be that the religious right would be chastened into sitting down and shutting the fuck up for a while. Keep your fingers crossed.

It is not the number of mormon votes he would raise, rather it is the vast amounts of mormon money. And if he got elected could you imagine the payback as he stuffed the McCain Administration with his Mormon brethren? And began to divert funds from Bush's  privatisation of government operations that have been going to Christian faith based orgs. to the LDS. Dobson and the fundies would have conniption fits.

Obama has all but announced Biden. The way I see it, this means pitting the two old white guys for the rest of the campaign. A smart if unsurprising move from the 'Ho-bama camp. McCain could really clog the works if he ends up nomming Carly Fiorina. Like antimatter, she's sorta the same as Hillary, but more stupider.

Dunno, the Republicans have all but chased the conservatives right out of the party.  Who's left to take control?

Is it too late to get Hillary on the McCain team? After all, we know that bitch will go whichever way leads to the White House.

Don't hold that against her--every president we've ever had did that too. They were better at concealing it.

Thanks for linking that.  I'm not sure the turntable works after all these years of gathering dust.  So the LP hasn't been played in quite some time.  I remembered it fondly.

Obama must have really appreciated being called articulate, bright and clean!

I bet Biden polls well amongst these folks.

The right-wing propaganda machine is going to have a heyday with this...

I was right there with you, sweetie. I was one of 3 punk kids (and the only girl to boot) at my ritzy-titzy Catholic high school. I give my kids shit all the time about the "old days," saying things like, "oh, you went to Hot Topic? At the MALL? We didn't have no freakin' Hot Topic in my day. We had to make our own T-shirts! Ever wonder why so many bands had black-and-white stick figure logos? Cuz we drew them ourselves with sharpie markers! And we colored our hair with Kool-Aid! Do you know how much shit I had to take so that you could walk around in your off the rack 'alternative' clothes?"

Heh heh.
