No surprises here. I can't wait to hear how Phreddy and Ptah spin the report of a bipartisan panel.
In other news, McCain tries to distance himself from the people he and Palin inflamed.

Case closed, bitch.

This explains a lot. They knew this was coming. They tried everything they could to try and get some momentum over the last week, even went to the trouble of creating their own report to preempt this one (the're report concluded she did nothing wrong, natch.) Then today they saw that they had gained no traction, they realized they couldn't stop the report from being released (Alaskan supreme court ruled against them a couple of days ago,) and that the overwhelming majority Republican Alaskan congressional committee was going to vote their unanimous support for the findings. They knew they were dead. McCain is now trying to save some face and lose in some (by his terms) honorable fashion.
All Hail the Chief, President (presumptive) Barack Obama.
Assuming he lives to see inauguration.

This is my primary concern. Of secondary concern is the worry that Cheney might have his sockpuppet declare martial law for some trumped-up reason. I really wouldn't put it past them, as they've spent the last eight years putting the executive orders into place to do it.

I'm now wondering how bad the Republicans want to poison the well. They have just enough power to make things ungovernable for Obama. I think a bunch of people are doing some serious soul searching out there.

On Hannity they didn't even apply any spin. They just said that Palin should take any measure neccesary, including abusing her power, to remove the trooper from his job.

They knew it was coming and could go against them from the moment they selected her. In the first interviews given by McCain campaign spokesman about troopergate, they floated plan B and then backed off on it in the hope they could delay the report's release. The spokesman suggested then their fallback, all the while denying she had used her office for personel vendettas, that even if she had abused her power and fired the commisioner in retalitaion, the public should give her a pass because the ex brother in law trooper is an evil dude.
McCain had to know all about this as it is unimaginable that Palin would not have told him in vetting. What does that say about his judgement?

Fortunately, I have been able to avoid having contact with people like that. All of the Republicans I know are the rich, educated ones who wouldn't associate with anyone on that board. They are the ones who used to respect McCain, and are utterly disgusted with his VP choice.

Lord God,
Evil is everyone and our nation faces perilous times. May the American people awaken from their hypnotic trance before it is too late.
Lord, I pray for President Bush. The love of money is the root of all evil and he is messing with evil. A lot could happen that could hamper freedom in this nation and the world. Keep him on the right side. Keep him from erring or choosing poorly in efforts to stabilize our economy.
I pray for Senator McCain. May he see clearly what our nation is facing and may he be bold in denouncing the evil that surrounds us. And for Governor Palin, we love her Lord and hate how they have treated her. Comfort her and deliver her from those who would do her harm. She may well be our Esther or our Deborah - fighting on the side of right, against infanticide and for Your people Israel. There are still righteous in America who want to see this nation turn to You. For our sakes Lord, and for Your name’s sake, touch our land.
In Jesus mighty name I pray, Amen.

Heh, except that the Right wing noise machine is now accusing him of being more delighted in taking on the conservattive base rather then taking the fight to the democrats.
He is trying to keep a lid on it. Earlier this week at some rallys he started barring reporters from being allowed access to the crowds in the stands. Sending security to politely, but firmly remove reporters from amongst his supporters if they are spotted leaving the press area.
Usually republican candidates are masters of duplicity in managing the supporters smears and hatemongering. But listening to the audio of McCain's responses to the hate language from his crowd he sounds like he is being bowled over by it and pleading.
On Friday, McCain rejected the bait.
"I don't trust Obama," a woman said. "I have read about him. He's an Arab."
McCain shook his head in disagreement, and said:
"No, ma'am. He's a decent, family man, a citizen that I just happen to have disagreements with (him) on fundamental issues and that's what this campaign is all about."
He had drawn boos with his comment: "I have to tell you, he is a decent person and a person that you do not have to be scared of as president of the United States."

A few things many seem to be unaware of:
1. Palin did not fire Public Safety Comissioner Monegan but was well within her rights to dismiss him without cause.
2. Trooper Wooten is still employed and was never fired.
3. In addition to the illegal moose harvest, child tasering, several drunk driving incidents (covered by his cop buddies), Trooper Wooten threatened to kill Palin's father if he interceded in the divorce. He's just another rogue asshole cop.
4. The "abuse of power" she was found to have exercised was for NOT calling Todd off as he attempted to have Wooten's actions scrutinized.
I supported Palin for governor. She did a great job cleaning house. She took on big oil...and won. She spearheaded the biggest shake-up in Alaska's politics in decades. The people turning this Alaskan "trailer park dust-up" into a "national donnybrook" do so for the following reasons:
1. They are democrats doing the party's dirty work to help sway the national election.
2. They are the once-entrenched republican old guard/oil company shills & sycophants forced to cede their "place at the trough" back to the people of Alaska
3. The head of the committee (Kim Elton, D Juneau) despises Palin because she wants to move our current no-road-access-capitol to a more central and less expensive location thus ending Juneau's welfare status.
I'm no apologist for Palin. The stuff she's spewing for McCain is out of line... and from what most Alaskans know of her, out of character as well. I think she's over her head at this level and as a Ron Paul supporter, can't bring myself to vote either ticket. Bottom line: We'll take her back as governor.

1) Who the fuck are you? (you're welcome here, i'm just asking)
2) The motives of the bi-partisan committee are irrelevant. What matters are the findings. They could have started this process because they detest her; it doesn't matter if the findings are accurate. I'm sure a lot of local DAs prosecute people that they abhor--that doesn't enter into the equation of the guilt of the defendant either.
3) That Wooten guy was an asshole, but pointing that out reminds me of how CheneyCo. accused everybody against preemptive wars of liking Saddam. Wooten's sins are a separate issue, and doesn't excuse abuse of power.
4) "Abuse of power" is enough for me. Who will Todd be allowed to fire in the white house?
She might be great for alaska, but (again, no offense) this is the big league. What makes somebody good at governing Alaska is wildly different from what makes somebody good at governing the United States. The only thing that really matters is that Palin is, as you said, "over her head."

Todd and Sarah Palin weren't just proved to have been trying to have him scrutininzed, the findings said that they tried to used the power of her office (and the sway of the "First Dude") to try to get him fired and prevent him from being hired to another job. Todd Palin wasn't just some guy, he regularly was given the authority to conduct state business.
You're right that though the report found that Monnegan's dismissal was most likely related to his refusal to fire Wooten, there is no legal requirement that there be a better reason and it was legal. What wasn't legal was the abuse of power to attempt to get Wooten fired. It doesn't matter whether or not Wooten was an asshole. If we fired every asshole on the police force around here we'd have two guys in a car covering the whole city.

I'm sorry: did you just learn this? The drive to move the capital from Juneau was around long before Elton - a guy I like, by the way - and has been pushed by the Repubs for years, primarily because it would move the capital to their own base of support in Southcentral Alaska. Remember Willow? Anchorage already controls the purse strings and dominates the state politically; moving the capital there would mean locking out the Bush and other far flung communities from government dialogue, right into the hands of institutions like BP and the very trolls that helped make Palin's ascent possible back in the early 1990s.

Whatever the benefits of relocating the capital, moving it to Anchorage has been used since I was born as a means to scam the taxpayers and an insider real estate scheme. What was that name of the valley outside Anchorage that incumbent politicians brought up in the 1970s and sold off lots to their rube electorate for the new capital, all the while promissing Alaskans they would make the lower 48 taxpayers pony up the moving expenses?
Once the bush was settled Alaska truly became the final American frontier.

Taint can you shed any light on this:
Palin endorsed Chryson’s (Alaskan Independence Party chairman) unsuccessful initiative to move the state Legislature from Juneau to Wasilla....
“With Sarah as a mayor,” said Chryson, “there were a number of times when I just showed up at City Hall and said, ‘Hey, Sarah, we need help.’ I think there was only one time when I wasn’t able to talk to her and that was because she was in a meeting.”
Chryson says the door remains open now that Palin is governor.

Just as an aside, I've met Chryson. To be perfectly honest, I don't remember what I talked with him about, but I do recall meeting him in his capacity as a rep of the AIP.
The effort to move the capital from Juneau to southcentral Alaska is a long one. Moving the Legislature to Willow (more notable to non-Alaskans as the alternative starting point for the Iditarod) was probably the most ambitious and well organized undertaking. I believe, ultimately, it was voted down but I don't recall if that was in a statewide vote or in the legislature.
In 1994, a new crop of legislators arose out of Mat-Su - the borough in which Wasilla is located - and one of their goals was to move the capital to Wasilla. From their perspective, it made sense. It wouldn't be in Anchorage, but it would be in a community almost at the juncture of the key roads and railroads in the state's sparse road system. Mat-Su is the fastest growing region in the state, and could reasonably accommodate the growth and infrastructure needed for such a project. The issue has never gone away. At one point, it was suggested the legislature be moved to a declining shopping mall in Wasilla. I believe it was former legislator Scott Ogan (a man with an enormously sketchy history of his own) who pushed for that. Nothing ever came of it.
Most important, of course, is that plenty of those who want to move the capital to Wasilla, or at least Mat-Su, have property there and stand to make a great deal of money if it were to ever go through.
Juneau is a pain in the ass to get to, but I've always felt it made more sense to keep the capital there because a) Juneau is far more dependent upon the support it receives as the capital, and b) it ensures the southeastern part of the state is more profoundly tied in with "mainland" Alaska.

How refreshing that she does not let herself get bogged down in the details.
Palin Attuned More to Public Will, Less to Job's Details
"She's not known for burning the midnight oil on in-depth policy issues," said Larry Persily, a former journalist who was associate director of the governor's Washington office until the spring.
But those who know her say Palin, 44, is uncommonly deft at something else: sensing the mood of her constituents, shaping her public messages and harnessing a remarkable personal popularity to accomplish what she wants. "She has an incredible pulse on the public will," said Bruce Botelho, a Democrat who is mayor of Juneau, the state capital.
"She tends to . . . create a situation where legislators are cornered -- going against her would be political suicide," said John Bitney, who grew up with Palin, was her campaign policy director and became her first legislative liaison.
I’m not ready to compare Sarah Palin to Reagan just yet, but it is telling that this was one of the main critiques his detractors threw at him during his rise and 2 terms in office.
