If you take The Usual Suspects, American Beauty, Seven, 21, The Negotiator, L.A. Confidential and The Ref you have all you need to trust that the man has the chops needed to be on the screen. Yes, he has made some terrible choices but I think the oeuvre listed above can overshadow all that.
