One would think, but I fear that he just makes the stupid feel they have a legitimate voice and keeps them mobilized.  Same with Palin.

The Orange has a good point.  It was McCain's constant sucking up to what he kept calling "the base" (and oh, what delicious unintentional irony in that name) that wound up losing him the election.  I lost count of the number of people, famous and otherwise, who said they were longtime Republicans and still conservative but were voting for Obama.  Americans in the main were horrified and disgusted.  If there really is a "culture war," these yahoos are severely outnumbered--and apparently too stupid to realize it.

I don't know, Bush got elected the same way, and McCain came awful close.
