He was deported when a traffic stop revealed his documents to be fake. My sister ended up paying a coyote a fuckload of money to get him back here, and he told us about a couple who couldn't make it.
They left them to die.

There really are some people from Mexico who come here for convenience's sake. They have it pretty good, but are looking for something better. They're the exception, though, not the rule, and none of them would bother crossing the desert. They'll pay money to be smuggled across. The people who cross the desert are the ones who have so little that it's worth hiking for 40+ hours across the desert, and yes, people do die. A lot.

The deal with him was pretty sad.
His family came here when he was 5, and his dad died when he was 15.
He went through school here, and the mom handled all their citizenship but his and the next oldest brother. All 4 of the girls got taken care of. Thanks, Mom.
When he was deported, the only person he even knew in Mexico was his grandmother, who he hadn't seen since he was 5. We send back people who don't know anyone in their home countries. How is that supposed to work?
At any rate, having been deported, the US has banned him from applying for citizenship for 10 years. He's fucked, and that's why my niece broke up with him. Not even marrying him would fix things. When he and my niece came to visit, Mr. Sofie felt sorry for him and bought him new (better) fake IDs. It was all we could do for him.
I still have his old fake ID (which is the worst one I've ever seen).

If he was trying to drive with it, no wonder he got popped. That’s an identification card not a driver’s license. It’s all I have too. They’re fine for flying, but even bars hassle me sometimes. And cops think DUI right away and get nosy.
