Hey kids! Let's play a Sunday School game! When God condemns stupid people to Hell for being, well, so dazzlingly, blindingly stupid, what do you suppose they'll have to endure?

Sunday School, what else?

I’m always amused at how the people who claim to believe in a very young Earth full of species individually handcrafted by a wise old male creator, are the ones who want to destroy the habitat for these creatures, don’t care about species extinction, and show such disregard for the old man’s handiwork.

And God blessed them, and God said to them, "Be fruitful and multiply, and fill the earth and subdue it; and have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the air and over every living thing that moves upon the earth." And God said, "Behold, I have given you every plant yielding seed which is upon the face of all the earth, and every tree with seed in its fruit; you shall have them for food. And to every beast of the earth, and to every bird of the air, and to everything that creeps on the earth, everything that has the breath of life, I have given every green plant for food." And it was so.

God gave them his blessing and said:  Have a lot of children! Fill the earth with people and bring it under your control. Rule over the fish in the ocean, the birds in the sky, and every animal on the earth.  I have provided all kinds of fruit and grain for you to eat.  And I have given the green plants as food for everything else that breathes. These will be food for animals, both wild and tame, and for birds. (Contemporary English Version)

Neither you nor I are Evangelical Christians, so it’s amusing that you and I are discussing how they justify obliterating what they believe are individually created species and damaging a handcrafted planet.  However, neither “subdue the earth” nor “bring it under your control” can reasonably be seen as permission to “trash everything in your path.”  I have serious doubts about the religious faith of people who claim to have reverence for a creator god and yet systematically destroy his creations.  These same people would be appalled at the idea of going to a craft show and destroying some old man’s pottery.  It appears the average atheist has more regard for our planet and its non-human life forms.

Well, who do you trust to run the world responsibly: people who believe they get to go to Candyland and live forever after they die, or people who think that this is all there is and we'd better make the best of it?

Sadly, I have more trust in the absolute materialists than I do in most of those who believe there is more than we are able to perceive.  Not that it matters, but I believe the “Creative Force”, whatever you choose to call it, will let us and/or help us remove ourselves from the scene and continue its slow steady development of new life forms to replace the ones that couldn't survive our onslaught.

I'm waiting for her to sponsor legislation which mandates the half life of U-238/235 to be less than 6000 years.

I've said it before, I think all fundamental-midgets should be forced to have their technology designed according to biblical "laws".

Sadly, every animal on earth, including Homo sapiens, will foul its own nest and overgraze its food supply.  This regardless of how much horseshit is spread about "sustainability".  It is the nature of all animals and plants to aggressively overpopulate.  A die off or replacement by a better-suited species is waiting at the end of every cycle.

I'm not particularly a Doonsbury fan, but that is a personal favorite of mine.

In any given system, the bigger the boom the bigger the crash.

I don't think plague, hunger or war will necessarily end the race, but we do get extinctions around here from time to time. Our poles are fluttering, we're about to traverse the galactic plane, and the Mayans claimed we're fucked. The long money's on a Gamma-ray burst.

Naw.  I think I'll stock alcohol, ammo and antibiotics and plan on living a while.

Georgi, perfect Doonesbury.  If a pharmacy can deny birth control based on religious belief, then I say the rational world deny them anything that disputes their worldview.  Like electricity.  The lack of it seems to keep the Amish in line!

All of these end-of-days scenarios are colorfully documented here: http://www.exitmundi.nl/exitmundi.htm

Excellent link lechero, says it a lot better than I can.  We're fucked.  But ever so eventually.

As a homebrewer, I supply my yeast with a carefully balanced and comfortable environment full of food and all the things they need to thrive. And, since I don't like mead that's too dry to drink, I count on my yeast (since they are pretty much unable to plan for the future) to drown in their own shit long before they consume their entire food supply..... does this make me godlike?

Here's a hypothesis about our place in the universe that I had never considered before.  I think you may be onto something.

Genocide gets the creatures from the 11th dimension completely fucked up.

As the unofficial AZ rep, I will attest that this creature is locally loathed, despite the upstate tent revivals and the edgy churches scattered throughout the Valley. Which makes her a moron, by anyone's standards.
