The few, the proud, the developmentally disabled

Nine days before he was approved for federal long-term disability, a Marine recruiter picked Fry up from a group home in Irvine and helped him enlist. Court papers allege the recruiter told him to lie about his mental problems. The recruiter has declined to speak with the reporters.

It did not take long for Fry's life to be turned upside down by the regimen of the Marine Corps. After two weeks of basic training, Fry told Corps officials that he had autism. They either didn't believe him or didn't care. He urinated in his canteen, returned to his old addiction of pornography, and finally, went AWOL.

Last week the 21-year-old Orange County resident pleaded guilty to fraudulent enlistment, possession of child pornography and unauthorized absences. He was sentenced to 4 years but released, last week, after spending almost a year in the brig at Camp Pendleton.

I like the draft because there's no better way to incense the population against the government/military-industrial complex.

This is the exact reason we'll probably never see another draft.

I really wish all my paramilitary instruction had some use in local VAs, but they want you to have something like 1500 hours in halfway houses for sex offenders and over-active adolescents. The last thing I was offered was ONE afternoon on a Sunday. It would have been nice, as supplemental income and experience, but at the time it was offered wouldn't have paid for shit.

I really feel that our vets/active military are more in need of counseling that your garden variety neurotics who either can't stop washing their hands or are simply overwhelmed by the ownership of offspring. It's one of the few areas I'd want to get into (aside from GLBTQ issues), knowing it was difficult and required major follow-up. Yet, with the way the armed forces currently treat their returning or discharged service-people, there is a need greater than some rich bitch's inability to cope with the inadequacy of her pool boy.
