The next time someone on the right starts to bitch about tort reform I will show them this case.

During her last admission, on Nov. 29, 2003, ..., she was found to have lost 185 pounds in less than one year.

Success!

all of that is only worth $7m?  With the lawyer taking 60%??

In China the Doctor would have gotten the death penalty.

It would have been well deserved.

Yeah, I was thinking the same thing. No amount of money could possibly make up for just how fucking miserable her life must be now.

$7 million is the settlement, so it never saw a jury.  Since the case number was withheld I couldn't tell when it was filed.  My guess is this has dragged on for at least 5 years and the plaintiff just wanted to get some cash in hand since she probably has immediate medical needs to attend to.  The attorney's cut is 25-40%.

Well that just goes to show then. The system works!

And just think: All this because of an extreme form of elective surgery that is specifically designed to alter how the body processes food, for the sole purpose of improving the patients appearance.

You might want to look up what the first half of the term "morbidly obese" means.  Just sayin'.

Does it mean "exempt from the laws of physics"? ie: Able to consume a healthy quantity of nutritious food and yet, somehow, still gain massive amount of weight? Or just "A year of half-assed attempts at dieting and paying lip service to the physicians plans in order to qualify for surgery to replace your lack of willpower"?

I feel for morbidly obese people, I really do. I know they have a disease. And that disease makes them fat. But it isn't an excessive of stomach and intestine that is the disease, it's a lack of willpower. When they can surgically replace that, let me know.

I wouldn't rush to judgement. Although I am sure that many, if not most, morbidly obese folks bring it on themselves, there are some who do not. I have a friend who I have known for many years. She has always been very large. In fact, she was born that way. She eats a normal diet and is not into sweets, carb overloads, or any other form of gluttony. Her parents are of normal stature, and so were her grandparents.

No matter what she eats, she gains weight. She has had a gastric bypass, as the doctors were positive she was overeating. Her weight continues to go up. She can no longer eat more than a few mouthfulls before she has had enough. She suffers from malnutrition now, due to the bypass surgery and must take supplements daily to compensate.

Doctors are baffled by her condition, and have no answers. They believe she has a condition which causes her fat cells to multiply endlessly.

The way she is treated by others is just plain rude. It is understandable though because they assume she eats like a pig. She would do anything to not be fat. But apparently it is not meant to be.

Just sayin...

Touching story.

But your friend would be the exception and WalMart would be the rule.
