I think this stuff is teh cool--as long as they don't change the way piggy tastes while they're tinkering with it. If they do that I will join the lunatic fringe and throw Molotov cocktails through lab windows.
...Look, unless you live on nothing but fish which you catch yourself, pretty much everything you have ever put in your mouth has been "genetically altered." Human beings have been tinkering with other lifeforms since we became agricultural (if not before), for God's sake. The only difference is that now we're able to do it much more quickly; and white lab coats and pipettes and such are involved, which makes some people nervous.
I especially enjoyed how the author threw in this photo with no attribution or explanation (and take a look at how he renamed the image!). Judging by the comments, some of his readers are doubtless weeping with fury and trying to get the FBI and/or Sarah Palin on the phone.

There's a huge difference between selective breeding within a species and splicing together genes from unrelated organisms. What happens when GMO plants with the ability to produce penicillin make their way into the food supply? This is just one of the potential disasters waiting to happen, because of poorly thought out manipulation.

That was a nice touch. I front paged it, since there's been nothing on the landing site since 02/18.

Other than panic-mongering-among-the-poorly-educated websites using the subject screed, I was unable to find any sort of scientific report that pig-mouse hybrid animals are anywhere near being a reality. Instead, I found stuff like this:
The pig-mouse hybrids were derived from the fusion of pig lymphocytes and mouse renal adenocarcinoma (RAG) cells.
In other words, the "hybrids" exist as cells growing in test tubes, in this case to research a fatal health problem in pigs. Presumably, the idea is to find a way to control untimely death in pigs to the benefit of pork eaters and pig farmers alike.
Somehow, I can't fear that hybrid cells made from pig white blood cells and mouse kidney cancer cells will rise up and enslave us all, let alone produce a viable food product to pollute our bodies and souls.
