Option 1:
Louisiana. New Years Eve. Fireworks. Explosions at night. Starlings roost together in large numbers. Concussive blast causes internal bleeding. Dead within a minute.

Option 2:
One of the many chemical companies in the area (second largest concentration of chemical manufactories outside of New Jersey) takes advantage of the holiday time to vent off some noxious substance without government watchdogs and a flock of birds fly through the plume.

Option 3:
Someone poisons their bird feed and they all get it.

Option 4:
It's winter. Birds die. Internet is invented. We all speculate on it.

Crows (and starlings, along with other trash species like pigeons) suck ass!  I'm going to guess somebody poisoned them or they ate food contaminated by industrial waste.
