It's what Palm Springs gets for being PC and hiring a racial minority to be the police chief. He let his homophobia overcome the city's interest in promoting gay tourism. A Caucasian would have been more pragmatic and kept his homophobia to himself for the good of the local economy.
Edit: The city also depends on Jewish tourism, and would never have considered hiring a Jew-hating Muslim to be police chief.
