To give the dingus his due - "shit brûlée" was the tastiest metaphor of the thread (and something Taint might want to add to his gastronomic répertoire. [If he hasn't already.])

Certainly not; in fact I'm going to go make a cheese sandwich right now.

I have not. Despite the loose morals of my beloved city, our health inspectors are rather uptight about these things.

Nice try but we've had more good things done as bad in the name of duty, we all hate it when shit goes wrong but generalizing it into a condemnation of all efforts is not the answer.  Ask the Austrians, the low-landers or the Czechs.

Duty has been glorified in the interest of rich men and war. German soldiers were doing their duty while the Allies were doing theirs, and if you think that duty is noble then nobility existed on both sides. If you think that duty is a practical matter, again it fails. A man wide awake and committed, in battle by choice, is worth many times the man welded to his task by duty. In short, duty is what an army must insist on when it has little or no rational basis for war.

Duty was the last Chinese soldier killed while trying to prevent the rape of Nanking.  Duty was the hapless firefighters trying to climb the stairs in the World Trade Center.  Duty was the Pentagon Files.

Duty is not loading people into cattle cars, pursuing an asinine drug war (see Taibbi's recent blog) or dumping loads of data just because you can.

Hammers and axes can be used to create or to kill, that doesn't make them evil.  The establishment can create world wonders and magnificent works or suppress and destroy all of the good; it's really up to the people choosing the government.  The rising tide of random disdain for a government which we've created is pointless and ignorant.  Hell, at least Choad steps up to the plate and tries to disrupt the corruption he sees.  Y'all come along, stomp your feet, scream & whine and then hold up this worthless Manning scumbag as a hero.

Hell, when it come's to admiring people who fight corruption I'll take Choad over the disgraced Pvt. Manning every single time; and I've never even met the guy.  As a point of freedom and rights Bradley Manning is nothing but a Red Herring - and you've fallen for it.

Well said Em.  That's about as clear as it gets.  Apparently it is difficult for those who have never served to understand the meaning of duty.  I can understand that.  I cannot understand the mindset that everything our military does is somehow evil.  Almost all wars are about resources, land, and money.  But, to those being invaded and oppressed, it's about life, livelihood, and freedom.  Pacifism is not an option on that side of the fight.

No. Duty is not noble, no matter how hard you try to spin it. Duty is a slave-state-of-mind, perpetrated on ignorant niggers of every colour. You and Phredster are prime duped niggers; happy little apologists for plutocratic warmongers - people who wouldn't even let you in the front door of their houses. Even a snivelling, pimple-faced worm like BM is nobler for flushing his doody down the toilet than you are for kissing the chains that bind you to the machinations of evil men.

Assinine remarks. First off - you don't know who has served and who has not, so your exclusionary comment is facile and childish. Furthermore, your comments on life, livelihood and freedom are ironic as hell, since your military has not prosecuted a war out of anything but ignorance and plutocratic self-interest since (you were so fucking late joining) WWll.

And you and yours have done better?  If I recall the Canucks have happily followed big brother from down south into each and every conflict.

The political issues are the duty of the populace; service to that populace is a different thing altogether.  Disparaging one's willingness to serve because your fellow citizens suck is your problem; if you hadn't noticed once in theatre you actually have more pressing issues.

I'll quit "trolling" when you quit being a sockpuppet for the CIA and an apologist for plutocrats and warmongers. I repeat - your country prosecutes war for the self-interest of the rich. All resemblance to "freedom fighting" or any other valorous or noble endeavours is downright bullshit. But go ahead, as usual, defend the men who stand in the boots you seem to love to lick - them rich folk love po' white-nigger-slaves like you. You'll go to war for them, die for them, and say transparently assinine things on the Internet for them. And probably all for free. Sucker.

Right you are.  Instead they manufactured tons of Agent Orange and sent it to the US to be used in Vietnam.  If you're not going to join in a fight, may as well make a buck off it.

This is what's wrong with what we've become.  Robotic, low-intensity conflict fought from the other side of the world.  All in the name of some mindless politician's actions.

I can't abide by Manning and I cannot abide by this either.  Here we are still waging the longest war in our history with no discernible purpose or end.  Each grunt on the ground now has more than 70 support troops to support him, money flows on no-compete/cost plus contracts to the friendliest bidder.  Democrats and Republicans sit back and reap enormous rewards in their "Blind Trust's" and the war machine just keeps on churning out bodies; ours, theirs and the innocents just trying to eek out a meager life.

Had Manning actually had something that could have made a difference I would support him, instead he just spewed mayhem and lessened the chance that we could ever find out what the fuck is actually going on.

Fuck Bradley Manning - he just wanted fame and attention.

I'm also my own sock puppet.
As far as my current use of the word "nigger" goes, a careful reader would have understood it to have broader parameters than mere race, which matters to me little except in historical context (or if I'm choosing where or on what to sup). Confusing my sock puppet with the one manipulated by the owner of Fnord would not occur to anyone with half a modicum of mental clarity.

It wasn't handled appropriately, he shouldn't have been in a Marine Corps brig.  As far as the solitary confinement and suicide watch, unfortunate but necessary, the fact that they can't tell us why he was on suicide watch is HIPAA compliance pure and simple.  But then again, if he had to be on suicide watch why the fuck wasn't he moved someplace else; the brig is not appropriate for that sort of confinement.

What I feel is inappropriate was how politicized the entire thing was, it's a simple case of treason and they've fucked it up beyond belief.
