“Morally and economically,” wrote Rand in a 1972 newsletter, “the welfare state creates an ever accelerating downward pull.”

She's right about the welfare state and we must be ever viligant against it; however that doesn't mean we cannot have a society with compassion, we just need to remember to enable the weak.

What she was writing about were her own personal sexual kinks, not any deep political philosophy. It amazes me how many supposedly intelligent people fail to notice that while what she was talking about seems plausible, she was and is totally full of crap.

I like the idea that we are, as a nation, only as strong as our weakest citizen; just as a chain is only as strong as it's weakest link, or a squad of Marines is as strong as it's least able member. So why not support the weakest, instead of purposely pushing them farther down?
