Just in case you were feeling better about progress in controlling the meltdowns.

The unfolding disaster at the Fukushima nuclear plant follows decades of falsified safety reports, fatal accidents and underestimated earthquake risk in Japan’s atomic power industry.

Actually time is on their side at this point, the major (immediate) danger was in the first five days.  As we all know the real danger is built into the Japanese psyche.

To compare Chernobyl to the problems at Fukushima is ridiculous. Chernobyl was a disaster within hours (actually minutes preordained the outcome).

I'm not going to go into how many people died (or died early) from Chernobyl, because as usual the estimates several magnitudes apart, but I will point out that in the US 33K people died from traffic accidents last year.  Perspective, FTW!

If you insist on freaking out, I have iodized salt for sale.

If you insist on the real thing, you're fucked.

Potassium iodide works (if you're under forty, are exposed to certain isotopes of iodine only, and take the tablets immediately prior to exposure) effectively. Iodized salt prevents goiter.
