We need an amendment to the constitution that requires transparency in all financial matters and a balanced budget. As much as you and other left leaning types may question the motives of the new Tea Party members of Congress, this is exactly the kind of backroom bullshit they have vowed to ferret out. The claims that they only want to whack NPR and Family Planning is a political ruse. They are out to choke off the money flow and make lawmakers prioritize thier choices for funding. In that type of climate, the big sweetheart deals will be much harder to make.

I have some nice beachfront property in Iwate for you to invest in, too!

The tea partiers might promise to ferret it out and may honestly think that they can and will. The nature of politics is such that as soon as they are given the opportunity they will use it to their advantage and it will be the same thing all over again. The only political movement I can see that would avoid this theft are the Austro-libertarians. Seeing as their main monetary platform is to end the federal reserve and the federal government the tools to do this would be gone.

Yup. Power corrupts. Tea baggers are not immune. They will rationalize their theft just like every other party and administration.

I would take an alternate tack: Pay politicians enough to get the best minds and managers competing for the job. Pay representatives $5 mil a year and senators $10 mil. Give the president $50 mil a year.
Right now we pay our public "servants" less than they would make as an accountant in a small firm. So they have to sell our asses down the river for a hundred grand here or a hundred grand there. Take away the need for greed and you will at least see the stakes raised high enough that the fraud becomes much more noticeable.
