Any reasonable adult can foresee death or permanent disability is a possible outcome of committing a violent crime or a crime against property.  Therefore, because such consequences can be foreseen, damages aren't usually awarded for injuries or deaths resulting from stupid or illegal behavior.

Edit: Only a terminally stupid society penalizes people for protecting themselves or their property from criminals.  If a blond blue-eyed meth freak walks into a black owned business armed with knives like this jackass was, and the black business owners kill him, they are within their rights and should be given a medal.
