I linked to https://cruelery.com/header/ and picked off a surprising number of stunning banners, in alphanumeric order. Your mileage may vary.

I think that "surprising number" would be... let's see... DAMNED NEAR BLOODY ALL OF THEM?
Thank you, Mr. Bandwidth-Hogg.

You gotta lotta favorites there, choad.
But you left out a few here and there that I am fond of:
There are more; but I ought to quit. Actually, I love them all at least a little bit.

Speaking of bandwidth, it'd be nice if banner-makers could take the time to tweak the quality of JPG files they save to keep the file size down (50K or less should be attainable in nearly all cases).

Could always add a file size check to daily maintenance and shrink offenders. Never tried that so dunno if it'd artifact mangle images or not.

It's probably best not to try to automate that since it really takes a human eye to tell how far down you can crank the quality before the image suffers.
Oh, and I'll add my vote for an overlooked banner:

Y'all have inspired me. I've used my meager MS Paint skillz to create this beauty:

I'm partial to 1x4, a vestige of newspaperdom, or maybe just indisposed to squares, present company excepted.
You'll hear Monkeyboy groan all the way from NH but I can always show you my ANSI banners from bbs prehistory. As you recall, they're teenie, tiny. Some are even "animated"!

Yeah, my brain pretty much filters out everything except the middle as noise.

Nice, far more impressive than anything from my misspent college years (I tended more towards the utilitarian - BBS menus, etc.). After futilely sorting through some floppies that were sitting around, I imagine those .ANS files have long bit the dust.

I wonder if I could get Photoshop to parse them. (OK, I've clearly just hit 'Critical Boredom')
