NEW YORK (WOMENSENEWS)--A flowerpot to the face from her ex-husband left Adriana Becerril a pulverized mess of blood, bruises and bumps while their four children screamed.
Injured and unable to report to her first day of work as the director at a Bronx preschool in September 2006, she sought four days of recommended medical leave and, after speaking to employees, thought she would begin the following week instead. She said she didn't want to start work with the children while her face was bruised and swollen.
Four days later, she received a letter by FedEx informing her that she was fired.

The pre-k in question prides itself in providing students with "authentic" interactions with adults, and since it's in the South Bronx, examples of "sometimes it hurts to be a woman" and "don't make him ask twice" probably should be on hand. It sounds like one of the directors has direct experience as a battered partner:
"Do you know how it feels to try to express yourself when you are always being told what to do, when to do it, and what you are doing wrong?"

Oh, come on. I say she brought it on herself. If she'd simply applied a little extra makeup, put on some dark glasses - and maybe a scarf - she'd only have to tell her co-workers she walked into a door.

This is why Muslim women wear burqas or veils. No visual evidence of being beaten=no social stigma over being beaten. Problem solved!

Good point, although I thought that extremist Muslims don't "allow" their women to work outside the home anyway... otherwise, I've known and taught some crackerjack Muslim women who just covered their hair, wore loose outfits, and went about actual business.
My explanation, rather than walking into a door, was "Krav Maga." It works!
